Where were the alerts while mass murderer rampaged across town?

Citizens of Austin, Texas, were not properly informed about a mass shooting taking place around them on Tuesday, according to complaints online.

34-year-old Shane James is the suspect arrested Tuesday night by Austin Police officers after he killed six people and injured three others, including two cops, in separate incidents taking place throughout the large city.

Austin Second Amendment activist, podcast host and gun shop owner Michael Cargill posted a timeline of the events on X Wednesday.

In Austin, TX December 5th, 2023. Guy goes on an all day shooting spree. From shooting police officers to shooting cyclist on the road. Here is the timeline.

•TBD – He kills 2 in Bexar County
•10:40 a.m. – Austin AISD officer shot near Northeast Early College High School…

As Cargill noted, the guy was able to go “on an all day shooting spree. From shooting police officers to shooting cyclist on the road.”

James reportedly killed both of his parents in San Antonio, Texas, before heading to an Austin high school and shooting and injuring a school officer.

Over an hour after the high school shooting, James was said to have killed a man and woman in their home.

The suspect then took a vehicle, shot and wounded a cyclist pedaling down a busy street, and tried entering another nearby home.

Police responded to a “burglary” at the home and found James in the backyard where a shootout occurred.

In the home, officers found two more dead individuals.

An officer was shot and injured in that firefight and the suspect escaped, crashing his vehicle twenty minutes later during a police chase.

James was apprehended after wrecking the vehicle.

Cargill also blamed “the lack of transparency from AISD police” for the situation lasting all day.

The lack of transparency from AISD police is why this continued as long as it did.

Several locals vented their frustrations online about the lack of public warning.

What’s the point of text message alerts if they aren’t being used for these types of situations?

An alert should’ve been pushed out. No one is coming to save you… you need to acquire the means and the knowledge to defend your and your family plus at the very least, Stop the Bleed training. The people were killed before police arrived on scene, you are your own best first…

i feel like alerts need to be sent out to the public about someone going around austin shooting people. was there no way to let people know to maybe stay indoors while this person was on the loose? i’m only just finding out about this

Seems this news is all one day old. Were all Austin media on vacation the same day? Why wasn’t city on alert? Why didn’t I get a text message telling me to watch out?

Can you or someone ask APD/AISDPD why a description of the shooter wasn’t released to the public especially after he was at large after shooting the AISD officer?

The citizens of Austin deserve clarity on the lack of communication by APD & AISD PD. https://t.co/jChVDwe3zc

I didn’t get a single freaking alert

What pisses me off is I was all around this yesterday and I didn’t hear anything on the radio or any alerts.

Literally my first time hearing about all of this

34 Year Old goes on a Grand Theft Auto shooting spree freakout in San Antonio and Austin. Kills six innocent people. Injures two police officers. I was watching the local news last night. And they barely grasped the entire story. But the Daily Mail covers it?…

I was all over town yesterday, and now I realize the ambulance I saw flying down I-35 around noon and the other ambulance I saw entering Mopac around 4:45 were likely related to this same rampage. So heartbreaking.

Drove right by a cop searching for the guy behind Alamo after he shot the cyclist and he crashed less than a 1/4 mile from my house. The only thing we heard from the city was the sirens and helicopters

The Travis County District Attorney’s Office issued the following statement Wednesday:

“Our hearts break for the shooting victims, injured officers, their families, and our communities impacted by yesterday’s senseless and tragic gun violence. We thank the Austin Police Department, Austin Independent School District Police, Texas Department of Public Safety, the US Marshalls, and the FBI for their quick work in apprehending this dangerous suspect. Our office is in communication with the Austin Police Department, other law enforcement partners, and federal prosecutors and prosecutors in Bexar County. The defendant has been charged in Travis County with multiple counts of Capital Murder. After he is magistrated, our office will formally receive the case and begin working on the prosecution in partnership with other prosecutors with jurisdiction.  It is expected the defendant will remain in custody pending trial.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) also issued a message:

“Texans grieve for the loved ones of the six Texans who were murdered by a hardened criminal who must never see the light of day again. The murderer also shot two law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Texas is a law-and-order state, and violence will never be tolerated. We thank all state and local law enforcement and first responders who apprehended this criminal and protected their communities. The State of Texas will provide all resources necessary to impose the full weight of law on this criminal for his despicable crimes. Cecilia and I ask our fellow Texans to join us in lifting up in prayer the families and loved ones of those who were killed, as well as the Texans who are recovering from injuries, including an Austin Police Officer and an Austin Independent School District police officer.”
