Trooper shot multiple times by suspect wanted for killing own girlfriend, authorities say

An Illinois police officer miraculously survived a brutal attack by a homicide suspect who shot and then pistol-whipped him as he lay injured on the ground, authorities say.

The shocking incident unfolded in Springfield just before 11 p.m. on October 24, but Illinois State Police (ISP) have just released videos and updated information about the case.

ISP Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green pulled over a vehicle driven by Cristobal Santana, a 37-year-old resident of Chicago, in a residential neighborhood.

“During the traffic stop, the suspect fired at least 10 gunshots hitting Trooper Chapman-Green several times, and struck him repeatedly causing facial fractures, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed,” ISP explained in a press release.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly clarified that Trooper Chapman-Green was hit by bullets in both legs before the suspect chased him down and “repeatedly struck him in the head and face with the gun after completely emptying the magazine.”

Footage captured by dash-mounted and surveillance cameras has been released to the public.
