Members of far-left environmentalist group Just Stop Oil used hammers to smash case protecting artist Diego Velázquez’s 1651 masterpiece ‘The Toilet of Venus.’
Deranged leftist climate change activists were arrested after destroying glass protecting a 17th-century painting inside a British museum.
The incident unfolded Monday inside London’s National Gallery as two members of the far-left environmentalist group Just Stop Oil used emergency rescue hammers to smash a glass protective case covering artist Diego Velázquez’s “The Toilet of Venus,” AKA “The Rokeby Venus.”
The Baroque-style masterpiece from 1651 has been estimated by some to be worth in the ballpark of $90 million.
The two activists were identified by the group as “Hanan” and “Harrison.”
After smashing the glass case, one of the activists bizarrely declared, “Women did not get the vote by voting. It is time for deeds, not words.”
“Politics is failing us. It failed women in 1914 and it is failing us now,” added the other activist.
A National Gallery spokesperson reported the two people were arrested and the painting would be “removed from display so it can be examined by conservators.”
The AP explains the painting, showing love goddess Venus reclining on a bed as Cupid holds a mirror towards her, had previously been targeted by UK suffragette movement leader Mary Richardson in 1914, when she took a butcher knife to the piece slashing it several times in protest of women’s rights activist Emmeline Pankhurst’s arrest.
The stunt comes as the activist group just last month unsuccessfully tried to form a blockade to stop a bus transporting migrants to a barge docked at a British harbor.
The radical left activist group also threw tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s 1888 oil painting “Sunflowers” at the same museum last year, but, fortunately, only the frame suffered damage.
