Rep. Thomas Massie warns: “It almost sounds like the domain of science fiction, dystopian science fiction, that the federal government would put a kill switch in vehicles that would be the judge, the jury, and the executioner on such a fundamental right as the right to travel freely.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has raised the alarm that he failed to stop a federal mandate that would require all vehicles sold after 2026 be equipped with a kill switch.

🚨 The federal government has mandated that all vehicles sold after 2026 must have a kill switch that can disable your vehicle based on your driving performance.

My amendment to defund that unconstitutional mandate failed tonight.

On Tuesday, Massie made his case to defund Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, going so far as to call the act straight out of a “dystopian science fiction.”

“I rise in support of my amendment, which states: ‘None of the funds made available by this act may be used to implement Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.,’” said Massie. “My amendment is simple. It will defund the federal mandate that requires all new vehicles after 2026 to be equipped with a kill switch that can disable a vehicle if the vehicle has monitored the driver’s performance, and that the vehicle determines that the driver is not performing well.”

“It’s so incredible, that I have to offer this amendment. It almost sounds like the domain of science fiction, dystopian science fiction, that the federal government would put a kill switch in vehicles that would be the judge, the jury, and the executioner on such a fundamental right as the right to travel freely. But here we are.”

Watch:

The right to travel is fundamental, but the government has mandated a kill-switch in new vehicles sold after 2026. The kill-switch will monitor driver performance and disable cars based on the information gathered. We will vote on my amendment to defund this mandate tonight. pic.twitter.com/Uf0Z2yVNP1

On Wednesday morning, Massie highlighted alarming parts of Section 24220 that specifically states the “Advanced Drunk and Impaired Driving Prevention Technology” is able to “prevent or limit motor vehicle operation.”

During debate last night on my amendment to defund the 2026 kill-switch mandate for cars, some Democrats claimed the technology wouldn’t monitor or disable cars. Here’s the actual law I had to read to them:

Social media users slammed the Republicans for voting against Massie’s amendment that would have defunded the kill switch.

“19 Republicans joined 210 Democrats to make sure we get kill switches in our vehicles,” said X user Oilfield Rando. “But remember, Trump is the only reason people won’t show up for the GOP.”
