Former UN ambassador says under her initiative social media users would be identified by names listed on government identification.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley elaborated on her plan to force social media users to identify themselves.

Discussing her reforms on the Ruthless Podcast, the former UN ambassador said under her initiative all social media users would be identified by the names listed on their government identification.

“They need to verify every single person on their outlet because, and I want it by name,” Haley told the podcast.

“What about Smug? Does he, does he qualify?” one of the show’s hosts asked about a fellow co-host, who goes by @comfortablysmug on X, formerly Twitter.

“If ‘Smug’ is on your driver’s license, then, and look, you can put Smug in parenthesis, but I want everybody’s name,” Haley responded.

The former South Carolina governor unveiled her plan to remove the long-standing veil of anonymity enjoyed by internet users on Tuesday, telling Fox News that anonymous posts on social media pose a threat to “national security.”

“Every person on social media should be verified by their name,” she said, adding, “First of all, it’s a national security threat.”

Haley argued getting rid of anonymous posts would help combat bots from foreign countries, and even suggested her idea would lead to a social media utopia, claiming having people identify themselves would foster civility online.

“When you do that, all of a sudden people have to stand by what they say and it gets rid of the Russian bots, the Iranian bots, and the Chinese bots.”

“And then you’re going to get some civility when people know their name is next to what they say, and they know their pastor and their family member is going to see it, it’s going to help our kids and it’s going to help our country.”

Haley’s plan was heavily criticized online, with some calling it unconstitutional and saying it threatens free speech, but it remains to be seen whether her attack on anonymous posts will resonate with Republican voters in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
