Conservatives and Democrats alike seized on Republican presidential contender asserting she didn’t know her history or was just plain dumb.
Neocon Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley was criticized after she failed to list slavery as a cause of the American Civil War.
The former governor of South Carolina was accused of purposely omitting the subject when asked point blank by a voter to name the cause of the conflict between the Northern and Southern states in the 1860s.
“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run,” she responded. “The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.”
“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” Haley continued. “And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people.”
Haley went on to add that two issues that sparked the Civil War were the battle for freedom and the First Amendment.
“It was never meant to be all things to all people,” Haley continued. “Government doesn’t need to tell you how to live your life. They don’t need to tell you what you can and can’t do. They don’t need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom.”
“We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.”
The man who asked the question claimed he was “astonished” Haley responded “without mentioning the word slavery.”
“What do you want me to say about slavery?” Haley asked, adding, “Next question.”
Despite the GOP candidate’s response speaking to the nuance and overall themes behind the Civil War, conservatives (Trump and Ron DeSantis supporters) and Democrats alike seized on the Republican presidential candidate asserting she didn’t know her history or was just plain dumb.
Democrats were distraught Haley didn’t honor their premier cause célèbre.
“It was about slavery,” Joe Biden babbled from his rocking chair.
Meanwhile, CNN and Fox News tried to save face for the Republican contender who they hope can defeat Donald Trump, blaming the voter of being a Democrat plant intent on stumping her.
Later appearing on CNN to refine her statement, Haley remarked, “Of course the Civil War was about slavery … But it was also more than that. It was about the freedoms of every individual. It was about the role of government.”
Footage from 2010 shows Haley has previously side-stepped the issue of slavery as a cause of the Civil War.
Trump recently quashed rumors he was considering Haley as a VP pick in a statement on Truth Social on Tuesday referring to her as “Birdbrain.”
It remains to be seen whether Haley’s campaign can weather the firestorm she triggered that’s dividing people on the right and enraging Democrat voters.
