Suspect, passengers run into oncoming traffic during harrowing chase on I-35 near southern border
A suspect smuggling illegal aliens escaped on foot after bailing out of a vehicle on a busy highway during a wild pursuit in Texas this week, authorities say.
The incident unfolded on Monday in Webb County near the southern border.
Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) troopers were attempting to stop a suspicious sedan when the driver began taking evasive action.
Footage of the ensuing chase was shared on social media by TxDPS spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez.
The suspect can be seen making a dangerous turn onto a service road before ripping across a grassy divider and onto Interstate 35.
He steers the vehicle across highway lanes as a door swings open before suddenly stopping in the median.
The driver and two passengers quickly jump out and hop over the concrete wall into oncoming traffic.
TxDPS says five illegal aliens were apprehended at the scene, including two found hiding in the trunk. However, the video indicates at least seven people were detained, although it is unclear if the others are U.S. citizens and also if they were part of the group that absconded over the wall.
The driver of the vehicle managed to escape and remains on the loose, according to the latest available information.
