Images of massive coronal hole on sun circulated on social media, prompting fears high-speed solar wind streams could disrupt life on Earth.

Solar observers are sounding the alarm on a massive hole spotted on the sun which scientists say will cause a geomagnetic storm and send high-speed solar wind streams to Earth.

A huge hole has opened in the sun’s atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind directly toward Earth.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Saturday issued a news update that the coronal hole would cause “moderate” and “minor” geomagnetic storming on Earth on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

NOAA classifies solar storms on a scale from G1 to G5, with G5 storms being the most extreme which could cause electrical issues and grid collapse and could inhibit tracking satellites.

Here’s an animation of how the high-speed solar wind streams, visible in images as an empty black void on the sun, would affect Earth:

Aurora watchers, get ready. The solar wind stream is on its way.👏 🥳

😱The giant coronal hole continues to spew out lots of fast solar wind toward Earth.

One X user also compared the coronal hole to the evil Eye of Sauron out of “The Lord of the Rings.”

While potential disruptions to Earth’s magnetic field are possible, X Community Notes and others note coronal holes are common and have never caused major problems on Earth.

“This is a still of a coronal hole, which are spots that are cooler and less dense than the surrounding plasma,” X Community Notes captioned a user’s post. “This is very common and are almost never a cause of concern. The Sun has had larger holes in the past with no problems.”

Guys, the Sun is NOT ok right now…💔

One result of the solar activity is that the phenomenon known as the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, which has been seen in recent weeks, would be visible to a larger swath of the population, including in places like Idaho and Nebraska.

“For places that have frequent Auroras, like Alaska, the light show should be spectacular,” according to Fox Weather. “The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute Aurora forecast shows the Northern Lights appearing throughout the entire state of Alaska.”

The coronal hole coincides with another solar event known as coronal mass ejections which are predicted to impact Earth on Tuesday.

India Today reports:

Adding to the cosmic drama, an off-target Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is projected to deliver a glancing blow to our planet on December 5. CMEs are massive bursts of solar plasma and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space. While this particular CME is not headed directly for Earth, its peripheral effects could still amplify the impact of the incoming solar wind.

In conclusion, while the mysterious hole in the sun is super freaky, it’s nothing to worry about, and on the contrary could instead enhance the ethereal spectacle of the Northern Lights. Nevertheless, the events serve as a stark reminder that if the sun’s storms were to become more violent, the situation could be much more severe.
