‘This is just a political Witch Hunt… and this is really truly election interference and it’s a disgrace,’ says former president.
Former President Donald Trump said he’d be willing to go to jail for violating an unconstitutional gag order, essentially daring the NY judge in his criminal trial to make the unprecedented move.
Speaking to reporters following Day 12 of his trial, the former president continued to bash his “hush money” case as a politically motivated “witch hunt” meant to keep him off the campaign trail.
“Anybody in there would realize there’s no case. They don’t have a case. Every legal scholar says they don’t have a case. This is just a political Witch Hunt. It’s election interfering — and this is really truly election interference and it’s a disgrace. It’s a disgrace, and in every poll I’m leading by a lot,” Trump told reporters.
The 45th president went on to slam the gag order imposed on him by Judge Juan Merchan, who issued a gag order last week that prevents Trump from speaking negatively about witnesses or jurors.
“It’s a disgrace, and then you have the other thing that maybe is even more of a disgrace was the gag order, where I can’t… basically I have to watch every word I tell you people. You ask me a question, a simple question, I’d like to give it, but I can’t talk about it because this judge has given me a gag order, and said you’ll go to jail if you violate it,” Trump continued.
“And frankly, you know what? Our Constitution is much more important than jail. It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day, but what’s happening here is a disgrace.”
The former president’s remarks come as Judge Merchan on Monday held Trump in contempt for a second time and again threatened to throw him in jail if he continued to violate his gag order.
“It appears that the $1,000 fines are not serving as a deterrent,” Merchan told Trump on Monday.
“Mr. Trump, I want you to understand the last thing I want to do is put you in jail…The magnitude of such a decision is not lost on me, but at the end of the day, I have a job to do.”
Trump has said he’s seeking to challenge the constitutionality of the gag order, but could he be thrown in jail before he’s able to successfully appeal the mandate?
