The practice has been described as “every parent’s worst nightmare.”

A British journalist posing as a young teenage girl was this month able to buy “large quantities” of puberty blockers online from Turkey, Hong Kong, and Russia, despite prescription of the drugs being banned for children in the UK.

The Mail on Sunday reporter found that social media sites popular among children—including Facebook, Twitter (or X), and Reddit—have been “flooded” with links to other websites where it is possible to buy puberty blockers without age checks or prescriptions.

The National Health Service (NHS) ban on prescribing puberty blockers to children came into place this March, although officials kept the door open for a possible future U-turn.

Less than a month later, Paediatrician Dr. Hillary Cass’ highly-anticipated report into the treatment of children who believe they are transgender was released, declaring that this “is an area of remarkably weak evidence.” The paper soon quickly prompted both the Conservatives and Labour to take—or, at least, pretend to take—a more cautious approach to the treatment of children unsure about their gender.

Yet the Mail’s investigation shows that children are able to get their hands on dangerous puberty blockers regardless, with some sites offering “express delivery” and others giving out discounts to those using the cryptocurrency Bitcoin.

One foreign dealer advertising a testosterone-blocking drug on Reddit told young boys who want to transition to girls that “it’s pretty effective at basically making testosterone useless.”

Tory MP Paul Bristow said “this all sounds like every parent’s worst nightmare,” describing black market dealers who are prepared to “cause irreversible damage to young bodies” as “vile.”

This all sounds like every parent’s worst nightmare.

The people trading in distribution of these products that can cause irreversible damage to young bodies are vile. https://t.co/VaBLae5Lis

The Transgender Trend campaign group responded to reports by agreeing that “the government must take urgent action to stop the black market trade,” but said that in order to be “consistent,” ministers must also “stop schools teaching the ideology that makes children think they need these drugs in the first place.”

Yes the government must take urgent action to stop the black market trade in hormone drugs for children.

But to be consistent government also needs to stop schools teaching the ideology that makes children think they need these drugs in the first place.https://t.co/idK07JQb1x

Government-issued transgender guidelines for schools, released towards the end of last year, were heavily criticised for failing to go far enough and, in any case, were not backed by law.
