Three bystanders were also injured in the deadly attack. The political assassination marks the 36th political candidate to be murdered in this year’s Mexican election cycle alone.
CBS News reports, “Cabrera’s death came just one day after a mayoral candidate in the central Mexican state of Morelos was murdered, while another one was wounded by gunfire in western Jalisco state. Last week, nine people were killed in two attacks against mayoral candidates in the southern state of Chiapas. The two candidates survived.”
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado Pinedam issued a statement on X, writing, “I strongly condemn the unfortunate events in which the candidate for the municipal presidency of Coyuca de Benítez for the PRI, PAN and PRD coalition, Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, lost his life.”
Para esclarecer este cobarde crimen y garantizar la no impunidad, he solicitado a la Fiscalía General del Estado de Guerrero hacer las investigaciones pertinentes para aplicar todo el peso de la ley a él o los responsables de este delito. (2/3)
