Over 100 hotels in the city have been converted into emergency shelters

A plush hotel in New York City has been used as a secret migrant shelter for over a year, according to a New York Post investigation.

The Square Hotel at 226 West 50th Street, which has over 140 rooms, states on its Facebook page that it is “closed for the foreseeable future.”

“We appreciate your patronage and hope to welcome you back someday soon,” the social-media post says.

An investigator from The Post visited the hotel and found a National Guard soldier stationed outside. A couple who tried to walk in to the hotel and book a room were escorted out by Guardsmen.

The Mayor’s office confirmed that the hotel has been operating as a migrant shelter since the spring of last year.

New York’s hotels are capitalising on the city’s deepening migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of migrants have arrived in the city and must be provided with accommodation and food. Over 100 hotels have been converted into emergency shelters for migrant families.

“These hotels could be doing a fine tourist business right now, but they are being lazy, and a sure-thing 100-percent occupancy on the city dime, and without having to provide traditional hotel services, is just too good a deal to pass up,” Nicole Gelinas, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told The Post.

The City has now extended contracts with the hotel association for a further three years, at a cost of $1.3 billion, which is nearly five times the original $275 million deal reached for converting hotels into migrant shelters.

Mayor Eric Adams recently said the migrant crisis could “destroy New York City.”

“Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to—I don’t see an ending to this.”

According to a recent poll of New Yorkers, a majority—58%—agree with the Mayor. A majority also believe that migrants have been more of a burden than a benefit to the state.
